Like a plastic toothbrush, bamboo toothbrushes also require proper care, so as to last longer. We use them at least twice a day, which means they can wear out quickly if not used properly. On poor quality brushes the signs of intensive use are visible even after a few days and they should be replaced. With proper care a bamboo toothbrush can be used for up to 3 months, maintaining its structure and properties. So how to take care of the natural material and how to extend the life of bamboo toothbrushes?
Bamboo - a natural material that reacts to external factors
Bamboo can be compared to wood, for example, which is also susceptible to external factors. However, bamboo is much more resistant against them. This means that it works better in more difficult conditions. It is light and resistant to mechanical damage, does not break due to impact and does not crack. However, bamboo is porous, which means that it absorbs water and can expand. However, this happens only when it is in direct contact with water for a long time. The care of a bamboo toothbrush should therefore focus not on protecting the toothbrush from water itself, but on its regular drying.
Bamboo can change its color naturally. Discolorations appearing on the toothbrush are not a sign of its damage, but the effect of natural aging of bamboo. This is inevitable, but this is the charm of natural materials. However, bamboo is resistant to high temperatures, so we can successfully use the brush in the bathroom, where it is extremely warm, and also wash it in hot water.
How to store a bamboo toothbrush?
We store it in the same way as any other toothbrush. There are several universal rules that apply to each one. It is best to store the toothbrush in a mug, we recommend the bamboo mug, which not only visually matches the toothbrush, but is also another eco alternative to a plastic dish. If there are several brushes in the mug, their heads should be secured with special caps. This way we avoid contact with each other and thus the transmission of bacteria. However, the best option is to store each brush in a separate mug. You do not need to use overlays, which allows better oxygen and moisture access to the bristles. The care of a bamboo toothbrush is therefore also connected with its proper storage.
Care of a bamboo toothbrush - basic principles
Due to the porosity of the bamboo brush and its ability to absorb water, it is worth making sure it is dry most of the time. Inevitably, it comes into direct contact with water during the brushing operation itself. Water in such quantities will not harm bamboo. However, after each brushing, the toothbrush is thoroughly dried. This prevents the expansion of bamboo and its browning. We also try to keep it in as dry a place as possible, for example in a cupboard, but it should have easy access to oxygen.
Proper care of a bamboo toothbrush also applies to its bristles. We do not leave any food or toothpaste on them, so after each use we thoroughly brush the head of the toothbrush.
The care of a bamboo toothbrush is extremely important for its durability, but also for its properties and safety. Untreated after each use and not dried it can become a habitat for bacteria that are later transmitted into the mouth.
